Do I need a doctor's referral for physiotherapy treatment?

Not necessarily - you can refer yourself directly for physiotherapy if you are self funding.  However, if your private health insurance covers you for treatment you will probably need a referral from your GP.  Please check details with your health insurance company.

Will my GP be informed that I am having physiotherapy treatment?

We will contact your GP to keep them informed regarding your condition and progress of your treatment.  At the end of a course of treatment we will write to your GP to summarise treatment provided and progress made, unless you request otherwsie.

Will I be seen at the time of my appointment?

All patients are given timed appointments and we endeavour to keep to these times.  Occasionally, usually because of unforseen circumstances, we may be slightly delayed.  Our receptionist will keep you informed of progress if this is the case.

How long does a physiotherapy appointment last?

All appointments last approximately 30 minutes.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

At your first appointment your physiotherapist will assess your condition.  At the end of this appointment, you might be given an exercise programme to follow on your own, or you might require further appointments for treatment.  The situation will be discussed with you and an estimate provided of how many additional treatments, if needed, will be required and over what time period.  Should this change during your course of treatment, the physiotherapist will discuss this with you and advise you accordingly.

What are the typical waiting times for an appointment?

We endeavour to see patients as quickly as possible.  Waiting times may vary, depending on the demand for our services, but our goal is always to treat patients as promptly as possible.

What should I do if I can't attend my physiotherapy appointment for any reason?

Contact us and inform us straight away.  We do not charge for cancellations where we receive more than 24 hours notice, but please tell us as soon as possible and do not wait until the day before if you can tell us sooner, as we may be able to offer your appointment to another patient.  You will be charged for cancellations within 24 hours.

What should I wear to a physiotherapy appointment?

You might prefer to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.  Depending on the injury or condition, we might ask you to undress down to your underwear so we can examine you.  You will be exmined in a private treatment room with no other patients present and you can bring a chaperone with you if you wish.

How do I know if a physiotherapist is fully qualified?

All Chartered Physiotherapists have undergone the required training to degree level and passed the necessary exams to enable them to practice.  They will have the letters 'MCSP' after their name and be registered with the Health Professioins Council (HPC).  MCSP means that they are Members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.  HPC Registered means the Health Professions Council has approved the physiotherapist to practice in the UK - HPC is a statutory body established to set and maintain standards for physiotherpists and other health professionals.  The term 'Chartered Physiotherapist' is a legally protected title and can only be used by qualified physiotherapists.  Anyone using this term illegally can be prosecuted.

What are your payment terms?

Payment is made after each treatment either by cheque, cash, credit card or debit card.  We have direct settlement arrangements with some health insurance companies - please ask for details.

Is the cost of physiotherapy covered by health insurance?

Yes, but contact your health insurance company prior to commencing treatment to confirm what benefit is available to you as policies vary.  They may give you an authorisation code for treatment that you will need to give to your physiotherapist and they may also require you to obtain a GP referral.

How do I go about getting a GP referral if it is required by my health insurance company?

Arrange an appointment with your GP, describe to them your condition and ask them to write a letter of referral for physiotherapy if they think that treatment is appropriate.

I'll be travelling by car - where can I park?

We have a free car park at the rear of our premises which patients are very welcome to use.

I'm disabled - do you have proper access to the Practice for disabled people?

Yes.  We have a special ramp which can be used for patients in wheelchairs or who have difficulty walking.  Our reception area and treatment rooms are all on the ground floor and we have grab rails at the front door and in the patient's toilet.
